About Head or Tails
Head or Tails is a free online coin flipper built for one job: settling a decision fairly in a couple of seconds, with no account, no download and no clutter.
Why we built it
Most people reach for a coin a few times a month — who bats first, who takes the first turn, which of two restaurants wins the argument. Almost nobody carries coins any more. We wanted a page that loads in under a second on a phone, flips once you tap, and gets out of the way.
Everything on the site is deliberately lightweight. There is no video, no heavy graphics library and no tracking wall. The coin, its dotted edge, the spin and the shine are all drawn with plain styling in the browser, and the sound is generated on the fly rather than downloaded.
How the flip is decided
Each flip calls the browser's own random number generator and maps the result to heads or tails at an even split. There is no memory between flips: a run of five heads does not make tails any more likely on the sixth. The animation you see is decorative — the outcome is chosen first, then shown.
We do not weight results, we do not favour one side, and we do not adjust the odds based on what you picked. If you want to read more about why streaks feel unfair but are perfectly normal, see our guide to coin flip probability.
The three coins
- Cricket coin — designed for a match toss, with bat-and-ball and wicket artwork.
- Football coin — a recognisable ball on one face for kick-off decisions.
- Classic coin — a plain heads-and-tails coin for everyday use.
All three designs are original artwork created for this site. They are not official ICC, FIFA, UEFA or national-board coins, and we are not affiliated with any sporting body.
What we keep track of
Your own score sheet — heads, tails and the last flips for each coin — lives only in your browser for the current visit and disappears when you reload. Separately, the site shows a live global counter of how many heads and tails have been flipped by everyone since launch. That counter stores only two running totals; it contains nothing about who flipped or where they were.
